Points Mafia Field Guide

Simple beats clever when you are getting started.

Hey,

The fastest way to get overwhelmed in points is to copy someone else’s 14-card wallet.

Do not do that.

If I were starting from zero, I would build a simple flexible-points base first. Three cards. Clear roles. No chaos.

The move

Simple beats clever.

Start with flexible currencies, cover your everyday spend, and learn how to redeem before you add complexity.

Card 1: Chase Sapphire Preferred

Start here if you are under Chase 5/24 and want a low-fee travel card.

The annual fee is still $95, and the card remains a beginner-friendly way into Chase Ultimate Rewards.

The Hyatt transfer change means the hotel math is less automatic than it used to be for some cardholders, but Chase still belongs early because 5/24 can close the door later.

Card 2: a flat 2x card

You need a catch-all card for everything that does not earn a bonus elsewhere.

The Capital One Venture or Venture X lane is a clean fit for a lot of people because Capital One miles are flexible and the Venture X fee can be offset if you use the travel credit.

The goal is simple: stop earning 1x on random spend.

Card 3: Bilt if you pay rent, Amex Gold if you eat

If you pay rent and can earn Bilt points without transaction fees, Bilt deserves a serious look.

If your biggest spend is restaurants and groceries, Amex Gold can be the better third card.

This is where the stack becomes personal. Do not pick the internet’s favorite card. Pick the one that matches your actual spend.

What to skip at first

  • Airline cards unless you have a specific airline reason.

  • Hotel cards until you understand certificates.

  • Amex Platinum until you know you will use the credits.

  • Niche category cards before your flexible-points base exists.

The beginner mistake is collecting cards before building a system.

Bottom line

Simple beats clever.

Start with flexible currencies, cover your everyday spend, and learn how to redeem before you add complexity.
