🌺 Hawaii for 2 on Points — The Chase Sapphire Play

A beachfront resort in Kauai or Maui runs $400-800/night in cash.

For a week: $2,800-5,600. Before food, activities, or flights.

One Chase Sapphire Preferred signup bonus gets you most of the hotel. Here's the math.

The Setup

Card: Chase Sapphire Preferred
Signup bonus: 60,000–100,000 Ultimate Rewards points (elevated SUBs run periodically — check current offer before applying)
Transfer: Chase UR → World of Hyatt at 1:1
Annual fee: $95

The CSP is the best starting card in the game, and it doubles as a killer Hyatt funding vehicle. You don't need the World of Hyatt credit card for this trip.

Hawaii Hyatt Properties — Real Point Costs

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa (Poipu Beach — the flagship)

  • Standard: 45,000 points/night

  • Off-Peak: 35,000 points/night

  • 602 rooms, 5 pools, direct beach access. The best Hyatt in Hawaii.

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa (Ka'anapali Beach)

  • Off-Peak / Standard / Peak: 21,000 / 25,000 / 29,000 points/night

  • Excellent property, better value per point than the Grand Hyatt Kauai.

Hyatt options in Waikiki (Oahu)

  • Hyatt Place Waikiki Beach: 15,000 points/night (budget-friendly, solid location)

  • Hyatt Regency Waikiki: 20,000 points/night (great hotel, right on Kalakaua Ave)

  • Hyatt Centric Waikiki: 20,000 points/night (boutique, walkable, well-reviewed)

The Points Math

Best value scenario: Hyatt Regency Maui, 4 nights

60,000 UR → 60,000 Hyatt points
÷ 21,000 points/night (off-peak) = ~2.8 nights covered

With an elevated SUB of 80,000–100,000 points:

  • 80k ÷ 21k = ~3.8 nights at Regency Maui

  • 100k ÷ 21k = ~4.7 nights at Regency Maui

Want the Grand Hyatt Kauai?

  • At 35k/night (off-peak): 100k points = ~2.8 nights

  • Stack a second household CSP or add a Chase Ink business card to get to 3-4 nights

Flights

Option 1: Southwest + Companion Pass
If you have the Companion Pass, your travel partner flies free. Southwest has direct mainland-to-Hawaii routes. This is the power move if you're planning ahead.

Option 2: Cash flights (often the right call)
Southwest, Alaska, and Hawaiian Airlines regularly run $150–300/person round-trip from the West Coast. If you can grab flights at that price, put all your UR into the hotel.

Option 3: United MileagePlus
Transfer Chase UR to United. Saver awards from SLC/DEN/LAX → HNL or LIH: ~20,000–25,000 miles per person one-way. Good option if you have leftover UR after the hotel.

The Full Trip Budget

Scenario: 2 people, 3 nights at Grand Hyatt Kauai (off-peak) + 2 nights Regency Maui

Item

Cost

Hotels (5 nights via points)

$95 in fees

Flights (Southwest or cash deal)

$300–600

Food + activities

$1,000–1,500

Total

~$1,400–2,200

vs. booking everything in cash: $6,000–10,000+

Why CSP, Not the World of Hyatt Card?

The Hyatt card has a smaller SUB and earns mediocre points on most spending. The CSP earns 3x on dining and travel, has a bigger bonus, and transfers to Hyatt 1:1 — plus 13 other partners.

It's a better everyday card and it funds Hyatt stays more efficiently. Get the CSP first, use it for a year, then consider a Hyatt card later if you want the elite night credits.
