The same seat can carry very different points prices depending on the program you use. The trick is knowing what sets the price before you move your points.
There are three pricing systems worth understanding: fixed value, dynamic pricing and fixed award charts.
Fixed value: the portal
At a redemption rate of 1 cent per point, 10,000 points cover $100 of travel. A $180 flight would cost 18,000 points at that rate.
But 1 cent is not a universal portal ceiling. Chase currently offers Points Boost on eligible bookings: up to 2 cents per point for Sapphire Reserve and up to 1.5 cents for Sapphire Preferred and eligible Ink cards. Check the rate shown for your card and booking.
A portal redemption ties the points price to the cash price at a stated rate. It is predictable once you have the quote, but it is still worth comparing the same booking directly.
Dynamic pricing: the moving target
Delta, United and Marriott use dynamic award pricing. The points required can change with the date, route, demand and availability rather than follow a fixed price list.
Dynamic pricing can win. A quiet travel date or an award sale can produce a better deal than a fixed chart. The tradeoff is that a price you see today may not be available when you are ready to book.
Check the live price instead of assuming a program always gives good or bad value.
Fixed award charts: where the mispricing lives
A fixed award chart publishes points prices by category, route or distance. Those prices do not simply rise dollar for dollar with the cash rate. That is where expensive trips can become strong points redemptions.
Hyatt still publishes an award chart. Its eight standard hotel categories now have five date tiers. Category 1 standard rooms start at 3,000 points. Category 4 ranges from 12,000 to 25,000 points, with a Moderate rate of 20,000. Category 8 standard rooms top out at 75,000.
Fixed does not mean the same price every night. A busy weekend can fall into a higher tier, and standard-room award space still has to exist.
Air Canada Aeroplan uses dynamic pricing for Air Canada and its Select Partners, including United, Emirates, flydubai and Etihad. Many other partner airlines use a fixed distance chart. Check which airline operates the flight before relying on the chart.
Virgin Atlantic also publishes partner award charts. For domestic Delta flights, its chart uses distance bands. That can price the same Delta-operated flight differently from Delta SkyMiles, but you need available partner award space and must include taxes and fees.
The Hyatt math, without mixing currencies
Hypothetical example: the same standard room costs $500 in cash, and a Moderate award night is available for 20,000 Hyatt points. Assume comparable booking terms and no extra award charges. That is 2.5 cents per Hyatt point: $500 divided by 20,000, multiplied by 100.
That is not automatically 2.5 cents per Chase point. Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred currently transfer to Hyatt at 4:3, so 1,000 Chase points become 750 Hyatt points.
Starting with no Hyatt points, you would transfer 27,000 Chase points in 1,000-point increments, receive 20,250 Hyatt points, book the 20,000-point night and keep 250 Hyatt points. The $500 stay is about 1.85 cents per Chase point transferred, before valuing those leftover Hyatt points.
That is below The Points Guy's October 2026 benchmark of 2.05 cents per Chase point, even though 2.5 cents per Hyatt point beats its 1.65-cent Hyatt benchmark. Those are valuation estimates, not guaranteed redemption rates.
The transfer ratio matters as much as the award chart. Compare the value in the currency you actually hold.
Fixed does not mean frozen
Hyatt expanded from three date tiers to five in May. Its Category 8 standard-room ceiling rose from 45,000 to 75,000 points. A published chart makes the prices visible, but it does not stop the program from changing them.
Transfer ratios can change too. Recheck the current ratio and the live award before moving points. Chase transfers to travel partners are final and may not arrive immediately.
The verdict
Use the portal when its actual quote beats the alternatives for the same booking. Cheap cash fares and rental cars are worth checking, but compare the total price and terms rather than assuming the portal wins.
Check dynamic awards too. They can be the best option on your dates.
Give fixed award charts a serious look when cash prices are high. Confirm the award space, include taxes and fees, and calculate the value per point in the currency you will spend or transfer.
Find the award first. Check the transfer ratio. Then move the points you need.
