Delta SkyMiles has a reputation.

Fully dynamic pricing. Award costs that change daily. The same seat can cost 30,000 miles on Monday and 80,000 miles on Friday. No logic, no chart, no predictability.

There's a reason points nerds call them "SkyPesos."

But here's what most people don't know: you don't have to use SkyMiles to fly Delta.

Several other loyalty programs — with fixed award charts and predictable pricing — let you book the exact same seats. Often for significantly fewer points.

Why Partner Programs Win

Delta moved to fully dynamic award pricing years ago. The result: no award chart, no consistency, no sweet spots.

Partner programs are different. Air France/KLM Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club both use fixed (or near-fixed) pricing for Delta awards. You know what a route costs before you transfer.

Option 1: Flying Blue — The Best Play

Air France/KLM's loyalty program. The single strongest option for most Delta redemptions.

Why it works:

  • Books Delta flights directly on airfrance.com or klm.com

  • No fuel surcharges on Delta-operated flights

  • Consistently lower prices than SkyMiles

  • Transfers 1:1 from basically every major currency

Transfer partners (all 1:1):

  • American Express Membership Rewards

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards

  • Citi ThankYou

  • Capital One Miles

  • Bilt Rewards

Flying Blue vs. SkyMiles — the real numbers:

~12,500

US → Europe (economy)

~25,000

35,000–70,000+

~140,000

200,000–350,000+

2026 update: Flying Blue is cutting Delta economy award prices by 20-30% starting in 2026. Domestic routes especially are getting cheaper.

How to search: Go to airfrance.com or klm.com → "Book with miles" → search one-way. On KLM.nl, leave the date field blank to pull a full month calendar of availability.

Option 2: Virgin Atlantic Flying Club — Best for Short Domestic

Fixed award chart for Delta flights. A legitimate sweet spot on shorter routes.

Transfer partners (all 1:1): Same as Flying Blue — Amex, Chase, Citi, Capital One, Bilt.

Virgin Atlantic sweet spots for Delta:

Route

Virgin Points (one-way)

Under 500 miles domestic

7,500

501–1,500 miles

12,500

1,501–2,000 miles

17,500

US → Europe (economy)

~30,000

The catch: As of April 2025, Virgin Atlantic added $1,000+ carrier-imposed surcharges on Delta One across the Atlantic — both directions. Delta business class through Virgin Atlantic is no longer a good deal.

Also: Virgin doesn't support Delta Premium Select bookings at all.

Use Virgin for domestic short hops. Use Flying Blue for everything else.

Option 3: Direct Transfer to SkyMiles

Sometimes you find a good SkyMiles rate. It happens. When it does, you can transfer directly.

Program

Transfer Ratio

Notes

Amex Membership Rewards

1:1

Usually instant. Small fee (~$0.06/100 pts, max $99).

Marriott Bonvoy

3:1

Terrible. No bonus for Delta transfers. Avoid.

Capital One

Not a partner

Can't transfer to SkyMiles directly.

The Capital One Workaround

Capital One doesn't transfer to Delta. But you can still get there:

  1. Transfer Capital One → Flying Blue (1:1) → book Delta. Best path.

  2. Transfer Capital One → Virgin Atlantic (1:1) → book Delta short domestic.

  3. Book through Capital One Travel portal — roughly 1 cent per mile. Not exciting, but it works.

The Full Cheat Sheet

You Have

Best Path to a Delta Flight

Amex MR

→ Flying Blue (1:1) → Delta. Or direct SkyMiles (1:1) if rate is good.

Chase UR

→ Flying Blue (1:1) → Delta

Capital One

→ Flying Blue (1:1) → Delta

Citi TY

→ Flying Blue (1:1) → Delta

Bilt

→ Flying Blue (1:1) → Delta

Marriott

Avoid. 3:1 ratio kills the value.

One rule that never changes:

Check availability before you transfer. Always.

Award transfers are almost always irreversible. Search airfrance.com first, find the flight, confirm the seats exist. Then transfer.

One more thing: Delta restricts partner award bookings within 21 days of departure. Book early.

Delta's program is unpredictable and usually overpriced. But the flights are great and the routes are convenient.

Flying Blue is your move. Transfers from every major currency, no fuel surcharges, lower prices. The 2026 price cuts make it even better.

You're already earning the points. Now you just know where to send them.
