You can fly Delta without spending SkyMiles.
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club can book eligible Delta award seats using Virgin Points.
Sometimes it saves a lot. Sometimes it does not work at all.
That nuance is the whole game.
Why this can be cheaper
Delta uses dynamic award pricing. The same route can cost very different amounts depending on date and demand.
Virgin prices Delta partner awards from a distance-based chart. For a qualifying nonstop domestic economy seat, the published bands start at:
Flight distance | Virgin Points, one way |
|---|---|
Up to 500 miles | 7,500 |
501–1,000 miles | 11,000 |
1,001–1,500 miles | 16,500 |
Taxes on a domestic U.S. award are typically $5.60 one way.
That creates a useful comparison—not a guarantee.
What the gap can look like
Here are three one-way nonstop economy comparisons searched on Delta for March 4, 2027:
Route | Delta SkyMiles | Virgin Points* | Better option |
|---|---|---|---|
JFK → MSP | 24,900 | 16,500 | Virgin saves 8,400 points (34%) |
JFK → ATL | 19,800 | 11,000 | Virgin saves 8,800 points (44%) |
SLC → ATL | 44,900 | 22,000 | Virgin saves 22,900 points (51%) |
*Virgin prices use its published distance bands and assume the same Delta award seat is available to Virgin. Check the live Virgin search before transferring.
The third example shows why this comparison matters. The same route can cost 22,900 fewer points through a partner when Virgin has access.
For Delta Amex cardholders, compare Delta's displayed price after TakeOff 15 before deciding.
The catch: Virgin cannot book every Delta award
Virgin only sees Delta seats that Delta releases to partners. A seat being bookable with SkyMiles does not mean Virgin can book it.
You may see an award seat on Delta.com and find nothing on Virgin's site. That is normal.
Virgin is usually strongest when:
The flight is nonstop.
The flight is domestic economy.
Your dates are flexible.
Delta is charging an ugly dynamic price.
Virgin is usually weaker when:
You need a connection. Each segment can price separately.
You are booking close-in travel.
You need Delta Premium Select or Comfort+. Those cabins are not generally bookable through Virgin on Delta.
You are trying to book Delta One across the Atlantic. Fees can destroy the value.
Every major path to Virgin Points
Virgin is useful because nearly every major transferable currency can reach it.
Currency | Typical transfer path | Usual ratio |
|---|---|---|
Amex Membership Rewards | Amex → Virgin Atlantic Flying Club | 1:1 |
Chase Ultimate Rewards | Chase → Virgin Atlantic Flying Club | 1:1 |
Citi ThankYou Rewards* | Citi → Virgin Atlantic / Virgin Red | 1:1 |
Capital One Miles | Capital One → Virgin Red → Virgin Points | 1:1 |
Bilt Rewards | Bilt → Virgin Atlantic Flying Club | 1:1 |
Wells Fargo Rewards | Wells Fargo → Virgin Atlantic / Virgin Red | 1:1 |
\*Citi transfer eligibility and ratios depend on the card. Confirm inside your ThankYou account.
Transfer times can change. Chase says transfers normally process by the next business day and can take up to seven days. Check the transfer screen before you move points.
The 90-second comparison process
Search the exact Delta flight on Delta.com using SkyMiles.
Write down the point total after any cardholder discount.
Search the same date and flight on Virgin Atlantic as a reward flight.
Confirm the cabin, stops, points, and cash fees match.
Transfer only the points required.
Book immediately.
Do not transfer “just in case.” Transfers are usually irreversible.
The honest bottom line
Virgin is not a magic coupon for every Delta ticket.
It is a second price tag for the exact same flight.
When Delta's dynamic price is high and Virgin has access, the savings can be enormous. When Delta runs a low-price award sale or TakeOff 15 beats the partner price, Delta wins.
Check both. Use the cheaper one. Keep your points flexible until you have the seat.
Reply with the Delta route you are comparing. I will use the best examples in a future update.
